ELLIS Alicante is pleased to announce that Dr. Nuria Oliver, Director of the ELLIS Alicante Foundation, has been appointed by the European Commission as Chair of the Transparency Working Group in the development of the first Code of Practice for General Purpose AI, within the framework of the European Union’s AI Act. Dr. Oliver’s independence and extensive expertise in AI, supported by her PhD from MIT and her recognized leadership in human-centered AI research, were key factors in her selection, according to the Commission.
This ambitious collaborative process will bring together hundreds of participants, including AI model providers, industry organizations, academia, and civil society representatives, with the goal of creating a solid and effective framework for AI regulation.
The working groups will address crucial issues such as transparency, copyright, systemic risk identification and assessment, technical mitigation of these risks, and internal risk management by AI providers.
The Chairs and Vice-Chairs of the working groups will be responsible for guiding the drafting and refinement of the code, ensuring an inclusive and diverse approach. The final draft of the Code of Practice is expected to be presented in April 2025.
“We are immensely proud of Dr. Nuria Oliver’s achievements and her passionate commitment to using AI for social good,” said a spokesperson for ELLIS Alicante. “This appointment is a testament to her innovative spirit, her global leadership in human-centered AI, and her tireless dedication to developing technological solutions that create a positive impact on society.”
