4th Edition Science Outreach Day for Students to Inspire Scientific Careers
More than 700 students learn about ethical, responsible, and socially beneficial Artificial Intelligence
ELLIS Alicante has held the 4th Edition Science Outreach Day for Students to Inspire Scientific Careers, a major event aimed at secondary school, high‑school, and vocational‑training students and teachers from across the region of Alicante.
Our 4th Edition Science Outreach Day for Students to Inspire Scientific Careers took place on March 16 at 11:30 a.m. in the Auditorium of the University of Alicante (UA), bringing together more than 700 students to introduce them to Artificial Intelligence and inspire them to pursue studies in science and technology.
The goal of the event is to spark interest in scientific and technological disciplines and to show how Artificial Intelligence can become a transformative tool when developed ethically, responsibly, and with a Social Good orientation—principles that guide all research conducted at ELLIS Alicante.
The outreach event was carried out within the framework of the collaboration between ELLIS Alicante, the Gestamp Foundation and the Banco Sabadell Foundation, aimed at promoting scientific and technological outreach among students. It also had the support of Raúl Ruiz Callado, Vice-Rector for Students and Employment at the University of Alicante.
The event was inaugurated by María Jesús Pastor Llorca, Vicerrectorado de Transferencia, Emprendimiento y Divulgación Científica and by Juan José Cortés Vélez, Director General for Innovation at the Conselleria de Industria, Turismo, Innovación y Comercio, who welcomed the participating schools and officially open the session.
Both highlighted the importance of encouraging scientific vocations and bringing technological knowledge closer to younger generations.
These opening remarks provided the institutional framework for a day led by ELLIS Alicante and focused on bringing AI closer to students, promoting its responsible use, and inspiring future talent.
During the event, Nuria Oliver, Director of ELLIS Alicante, together with the Foundation’s research team, shared with the students their professional experiences, their motivations for working in AI, and the current projects they are developing.
The Director of ELLIS Alicante emphasized the importance of approaching Artificial Intelligence with teenagers from an educational perspective:
“Many of them already use AI‑based tools in their daily lives, but they do not always understand how they work, what their weaknesses are, or the negative impacts they may have. Activities like this aim precisely to awaken their curiosity and help them discover the science and technology behind these systems, so that they can move from being mere users of technology to becoming its future creators. During the event, we presented some of the human‑centred AI research projects developed at ELLIS Alicante, including Maike, an educational chatbot that promotes critical thinking through the Socratic method, as well as methods to detect bias, discrimination, and vulnerabilities in AI algorithms.”
Students and teachers from twelve educational centers in the province attended the event: IES Haygón, IES Virgen del Remedio, IES San Blas, IES Mutxamel, Colegio Diocesano Santo Domingo, Colegio Santa Teresa Vistahermosa, IES San Vicente, IES Doctor Balmis, CIPFP Canastell, IES Cabo de la Huerta, Colegio Maristas, and IES Jorge Juan. The diversity of participating centers reflects the growing interest in science, technology, and Artificial Intelligence among students and educators throughout the province of Alicante.
The event concluded with “Human GPT”, an artistic and educational performance created by Javier Ideami and interpreted by Art Corpore, which visually and accessibly explains the inner workings of the GPT model. This performance enabled students to grasp complex AI concepts through an inspiring and creative experience.
At its core, this initiative aims to spark curiosity in STEM careers, make Artificial Intelligence more accessible, and highlight its potential as a force for Social Good.
