Statement of ELLIS Alicante about the crisis in Ukraine

ELLIS Alicante, dedicated to research in Artificial Intelligence for Social Good, expresses its firm support for the population of Ukraine and its scientific community in this terrible, dramatic and totally unjustified invasion of Russia into its territory.

We strongly condemn both the invasion and Russia’s numerous fundamental breaches and violations of international law and the UN Charter, the pillars on which the international order is founded.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is a clear threat to peace, freedom and democracy, fundamental European values on which research and academic collaboration are based.

We stand with the brave Russian scholars, thinkers and students who oppose the Russian president-led aggression on Ukraine. We express our full solidarity with the Ukrainian people in their inspiring defense of sovereignty, democracy and freedom. We offer our support to the Ukrainian universities, research centers and research community.

We are proud to join other universities, research centers and scientific associations around the world that have already committed to similar actions and to the sentiments expressed in this statement. We urge institutions of all kinds to join us. Together, we will ensure that the fundamental values of freedom, sovereignty, peace and democracy prevail.

Science also has an important role to play in achieving and maintaining peace.
