Faces of Emotion: Investigating How Generative AI Responds to Human Feelings

Abstract: This talk examines how generative AI systems respond to different human emotions and how these emotions influence the kinds of faces the models produce. By generating large sets of portraits across various emotional expressions, the study looks at how factors such as age, gender, and ethnicity emerge in the outputs of several widely used text-to-image models. Using established tools to automatically identify demographic attributes, the work explores the relationship between emotional prompts and the demographic patterns that appear in the generated images. The goal is to provide an accessible view of how AI interprets human emotions and how those interpretations shape the distributions of the faces it creates.
